THE LEAD – The Salem State baseball team split its weekend matchup at Mass. Maritime dropped the first game, 6-5, but won the second, 9-0. Thanks to the split, the Vikings won their first Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) series of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)
- After a scoreless first inning, Salem scored one run throughout the second, third, and fourth innings. However, with an early 3-0 advantage, Mass. Maritime fought back and grabbed its first lead of the day thanks to a five-run fourth. Aidan McCarthy highlighted the offensive inning with a two-run RBI double that made it 3-3 at the time.
- Despite being down two, the Vikings ended up tying the contest at five behind a two-run seventh. After Cameron Diprizio (Wakefield, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch, Antonio Belgrove (Stamford, Conn.) drove in the tying run thanks to an RBI single through the left side.
- Going into extras, Salem wasn't able to get a run across in the eighth, but the hosts ended up walking off the Blue and Orange when a Michael Logiudice single found an opening in center field that plated the game-winning run.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 1)
- Belgrove led the Salem offense with two RBIs in game one.
- Ethan Hill (Stratford, Conn.) got the start for Salem and earned a no-decision. The freshman lefty went 3.2 IP while allowing five hits, five runs, and striking out four. Nick Krompegal (Bristol, Conn.) got the tough loss with 1.1 IP and allowed two hits and one run.
- McCarthy and Damon White both paced the Bucs offense with two RBIs apiece.
- Mass. Maritime starter Sean Hallissey finished with a no-decision on the day. The Bucs pitcher tossed 6.0 IP, allowed five hits, five runs (four earned), and struck out eight. Will Shanahan ended up with the win by going one inning while allowing no hits or runs and striking out two.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)
- Just like in the first game, Salem struck first in the opening innings when the squad plated a run in both the first and second innings. While Mass. Maritime threatened in both the second and third innings with two runners on each frame, starter Collin Tenney (Woodbridge, Conn.) escaped both jams unscathed.
- After a Yabdriel Gonzalez (New Haven, Conn.) RBI single made it 3-0 in the fourth, the Vikings' offense exploded for six runs in the fifth, which pushed the lead to nine (9-0). Gonzalez's bat would strike again in the high-scoring inning after he launched a grand slam to deep center.
- From then on, Tenney retired the last nine Mass. Maritime batters and secured the 9-0 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 2)
- Gonzalez had a career day at the plate, recording a new career-high in RBIs (five) while launching his first career grand slam.
- The last Salem grand slam was in 2008, by Ben Garlington (April 13, 2008, vs. Fitchburg State).
- Ethan Stepputtis (Prospect, Conn.) was the other lone Viking to finish with multiple RBIs by driving in two. He also extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
- Tenney earned the win for Salem by going all seven innings while allowing just three hits, no runs, and striking out a career-high nine. He also notched the first complete game of his career.
- Chase Dwight ended up with the loss after going 4.1 IP while allowing seven hits, six runs, and striking out one.
