THE LEAD: Thanks to a stellar outing from Nolan Currier (Maynard, Mass.) and an eight-run fifth inning, the Salem State baseball team kicked off Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) play with a 10-0 shutout of Mass. Maritime Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both sides would go scoreless in the first three innings thanks to strong pitching from both sides. However, in the bottom half of the fourth, Salem struck first thanks to an RBI single off the bat of Owen Duggan (Billerica, Mass.). Duggan's single found a gap past the diving Bucs second basemen, which allowed Yabdriel Gonzalez (New Haven, Conn.) to score after he doubled to lead off the inning.
- After a 1-2-3 top of the fifth from Currier, the Vikes bats exploded for eight runs in the bottom half of the frame and pushed their lead to nine (9-0). Gonzalez and Duggan both highlighted the scoring in the fifth with two-run RBI singles.
- Currier once again kept the Mass. Maritime offense at bay in the sixth and in the bottom of the sixth, the Blue and Orange tacked on another run to go up 10-0. Despite Mass. Maritime recording its first hit in the top of the seventh, Currier was not rattled and retired the next two batters and secured the 10-0 MASCAC win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Duggan led the Salem offense by tying his season-high in RBIs with three.
- Gonzalez was the other Viking to finish with multiple RBIs on Friday by driving in two.
- Currier had his strongest outing of the season by recording the second complete game of his career. The junior pitcher went all seven innings, allowed just one hit, no runs, and tied his season-high in strikeouts with seven.
- Aidan McCarthy recorded the only hit for Mass. Maritime in the seventh with a double that was just out of the reach of the dive of the Vikes' right fielder.
- Ben Zschau took the loss by going 4.0 IP while allowing seven hits, seven runs (six earned), and striking out two.
- Salem outhit Mass. Maritime, 9-1.
- The Vikings have now won their last three MASCAC openers.
