Baseball Milestones:
1937 - Salem State Teachers College plays first varsity baseball game against Gorham Normal School (Southern Maine) under the direction of Fred Pickard, Salem State's first varsity coach. 1999 - Head Coach Ken Perrone wins 400th game as Salem State goes 27-9, and earns fourth conference championship. All-American Geoff Eriksen hits a school-record 16 home runs, and earns the top slugging percentage in Division III.
1955 - Salem State basketball founder, James Twohig, leads the baseball team for eight seasons. 2006 - Behind All-American shortstop Derek Lyons, Salem State captures MASCAC title and earns school's first NCAA Tournament win, 8-5 over Southern Maine. Pitcher Talal Saleh also pitches Salem State's last no-hitter during the season, defeating Becker College 6-0.
1962 - Hall Of Fame coach George Blackwell hired. Leads team to undefeated seaon in 1963 and back-to-back New England State College Athletic Conference championships in '63 and '64. 2008 - Vikings play first game at their new on-campus stadium, which features the first all-turf basball field in New England. Salem State defeats New England College 16-4.
1969 - Joseph Lavacchia leads Vikings for a decade, accumulating over 100 wins while leading team to four conference titles. 2012 - Hall of Fame head coach Ken Perrone retires after 30 seasons at the helm. Perrone amasses 674 wins, placing him in the top 30 all-time in NCAA Division III.
1983 - Ken Perrone wins first game as mangaer, 4-2 over Amherst college in Tampa Florida. Vikings go 20-9 to earn program's first NCAA Tournament berth. 2013 - New head coach Mike Ward guides Vikings to 25-15 record In his inaugural season. Salem State wins the MASCAC regular-season and post-season titles, and earns the school's fourth NCAA bid.
1985 - Vikings win team-record 34 games. Pitcher Doug Gatchell, who was signed by the Cinninnati Reds leads the NCAA in strikeouts per game, (12.5), and anchors the top ranked pitching staff in the nation, which finished with an NCAA best 2.29 Team ERA. 2015 - Mike Richardson no-hits Framingham State, 1-0 on April 14. The sophomore allows one walk, while striking out six. Salem State, which tied for the MASCAC regular season championship, defeats Worcester State, 6-5 in the conference title game to earn an NCAA bid. The Vikings win their first two games in the New England Regional before being eliminated 2-1 in 12 innings by MIT.
1987 - Pitcher Scott Kimball becomes Salem State's highest draft pick (10th round - Milwaukee Brewers), and first All-American. He pitches a no-hitter and records 19 strikeouts in a game during his senior season. 2016 - Dan Connors hit for the cycle in Salem State's 27-5 victory over Nichols College in Port Charlotte, Fla. The Vikings win the MASCAC regular season title and tournamnet championship, defeating Mass Maritime 16-8. Richard Fecteau batted (.800) with three home runs and eight runs scored during the Tournament. Sean Buckland improved to 9-0 on the season, defeating Wheaton 7-4 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Salem State defeated Mitchell College 3-2 in an elimination game before losing to SUNY Oswego 7-3. Fecteau is drafted by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 39th round of the MLB amateur draft.
1990 - Head Coach Ken Perrone wins 200th game.
1994 - Team endures school-record 22 game winning streak while posting a 25-3 overall record, securing team's second NCAA Tournament appearance, and second MASCAC championship.
1997- Salem State selected to play in Cooperstown College Baseball Tournament.
